I love star gazing!

From my friend Dr. Chris Cline, professor at Westminster College:

I'm sure that many of you have noticed the two bright "stars" in the west, first visible just before sunset and then for a couple of hours after. Well, those stars are actually the planets Venus and Jupiter. You can usually tell when it is a planet since planets don't twinkle, whereas stars do. After the Moon, Venus is the second brightest object in the night sky, with Jupiter being the third brightest.

Over the next month, they (and the Earth) are moving such that they will appear closer to each other in the sky, before separating again. There will also be a couple of evenings that the crescent Moon will appear to be very close to either planet. While I hope that you get a chance to look every night, the nights you won't want to miss are:

Sat., 2/25 - Crescent Moon close to Venus
Sun., 2/26 - Crescent Moon close to Jupiter
Mon., 3/12 - Venus and Jupiter appear closest to each other (look the two nights before and after, also)
Sun., 3/25 - Crescent Moon close to Jupiter
Mon., 3/26 - Crescent Moon close to Venus

I put together a little movie so you can see how the planets will move in the sky over the next month. You can find it at

Christmas 2011 in Dayton OH

OK. So some of this is old but I need to record it for posterity anyway! Phil, me, Metta, Clair and Daysa got up really early Christmas morning and left for Dayton, OH. Kent had to work on the real Christmas day and the kids were none the wiser so we had Christmas on December 26.

The one thing I asked for for Christmas was family pictures so here are few of them are.
and
and now for my four stunning daughters:

I cannot believe what fabulous children we got. I'm grateful they chose me to be their mother.

And thanks to Leisy for finding this spot and for being the photographer.

Book Review

Hard Time (V.I. Warshawski, #9)Hard Time by Sara Paretsky

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Not my favorite VI book but it was an entertaining read in early February when not a lot else is going on. This felt flat and tired. In some places it went on too long and then all wrapped up too neatly too quickly.

Self-published authors find e-success – USATODAY.com

Self-published authors find e-success – USATODAY.com

If you're still out there and occasionally checking my blog, bare with me as I make an argument for self-publishing. I want to do some consulting on this idea (and maybe there's a book in my future) and so I'm going to collect my ideas and thoughts here. Please feel free to chime in and give me feedback and advice.

Birthmarked (Birthmarked, #1)Birthmarked by Caragh M. O'Brien

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Good, really good. Not Hunger Games good but pretty good. I will certainly read the next book. The female protagonist was believable and sympathetic. On occasion I felt like "that's too much of a coincidence to be believable."  But I recommend this to those who enjoy YA novels.
